Express Yourself Reflection

During this project I learned a lot about myself and my classmates. Everyone within our class has similarities and differences and this project showed me the important aspects of our lives. The Express Yourself project helped me not only learn about others and myself, but learn the basics of using Photoshop in a fun, yet challenging way.

I never knew that Photoshop would give me a way to learn more about the important things in my life and the important aspects of my classmate’s lives. Writing down forty words that describe four different aspects of my life showed me what I valued and what wasn’t so important after all.The three words that I found described me the most were “sister”, “social” and “studious”. I feel that these words really show what is most important to me. My family is a huge part of my life and I spend a lot of time with them. Having three brothers and two sisters always affects my life whether it’s in a good or bad way. I love being a sister to my younger siblings but also spending time with my older sister. I chose “social” as an important word because my friends also play a large role in my life and make me who I am. I love to spend time with them and they always know how to make me laugh. Without my closest friends I wouldn’t be the same. I also love to learn new things and do well in school. I chose “studious” for those reasons. During school I like to stay on top of my studies and receive good grades. School is important to me because I want to be accepted into college and have the choice to chose what I do for the rest of my life.

Talking to three of my classmates opened my eyes to all of the different lives people live. Amanda values the way her parents raised her and is spirited. She thinks that is the one word that describes her because she is a cheerleader and loves what she does. Her favorite things to do are shop, go to the beach and she loves summer. On the other hand, Sara loves hockey and to travel. Her favorite hockey teams are the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks. Traveling is a big part of her life; she has been to London, France, Colorado, and Florida. Her heritage is diverse too. She is Italian, Russian and German. Also, as opposed to Amanda she describes herself as social so that lead me to believe that her friends are a large part in her life just like mine are in my life. Finally, Danny is friendly, hardworking and determined. His personality helps him do well in football and basketball. He believes that you have to work hard to get the things that you want. Danny likes playing football better than basketball because it requires more teamwork and has a more competitive feel. He has one younger brother and another brother who is older.

This project has affected me in a positive way by making me see how diverse the culture within just one classroom at Natick High can be. I think that learning about my classmates benefitted me because now I know them better and feel more comfortable talking to them and working with them. This will lead to creating new friendships because we all know a little bit about one another and can build on that as the year goes on. Overall, this project was an excellent way for us as students to get to know ourselves better and also learn about our classmates
